October is Breast Cancer awareness month!

The month of October is widely recognized across the country as Breast Cancer awareness month. Survivors, family members, friends of survivors and or victims of the disease sympathize with the victims and raise the awareness among the public.

"Pink October" is an initiative started by Matthew Oliphant which ask website owners to change the color of the site theme to pink in order to raise awareness. A pink ribbon is worn to recognize the struggle that victims face when fighting the cancer. Breast Cancer awareness on stamps Several post offices including Gambia, Grenada,Kenya, Micronesia and more are dedicated to the fight and awareness and issued new stamps that support the fight and research of the disease.



The American stamp issued by the USPS is the same stamp also issued by Grenada and Micronesia. in the US alone this stamp raised over $54 million dollars toward research. Designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, MD, the stamp features the phrases "fund the fight" and "find a cure" and an illustration of a "mythical goddess of the hunt" by Whitney Sherman of Baltimore.

The Breast Cancer awareness stamps are available at local post offices, stamp dealers and Cyberstamps.

Breast Cancer facts:

  • Every year an estimated number of 180,000 new cases of breast cancer are reported
  • Every 13 minute a woman die from breast cancer
  • Breast cancer risk increase with age
  • Every woman is at risk
  • One out of 8 woman will get breast cancer in her lifetime
  • Out of the approx number of 180,000 new cases reported every year about 40,000 will die
  • 77% of breast cancer victims are over 50
  • men are also at risk but less than women. about 1400 new cases are reported in men every year; 400 of those will die
  • The first sign of breast cancer can show on a woman's memogram before it can be felt
  • Early detection of breast cancer through monthly self exams and yearly mammograms offer the best chance of survival
