August 31st-The 11th anniversary of the tragic death of Princess Diana
August 31st will mark the 11th anniversary of the tragic death of Princess Diana.
In this entry we will honor Princess Diana by pointing out her two main charity contributions that were always on a humanitarian rather than a political level. her kindness, support, willing to heal the world and help the poor and unfortunate earned her the nickname the "people's princess"
The campaign against landmines
Diana used her influential status to positively support the campaign against landmines. She visited countries like Angola and Bosnia and the appearance of her touring a minefield in helmet and flat jacket were seen worldwide. her interest was focused on the dangers of mines surrounding homes and villages and the injuries they create, often to civillians and children long after a conflict is over. in January 1997 when serving as a red cross VIP volunteer she visited landmines survivors in hospitals, toured de-mining projects run by the HALO trust and attended mine education awareness classes. Later in August of that year just a few days before the tragic accident, Diana visited Bosnia with the landmine survivors network. Her efforts were widely recognized and she is credited for her influence on the UK government and other nations in their signing of the Ottawa treaty a few months after her death that lead to an international ban on the use of anti personnel landmines.
AIDS awareness
Diana has a big part of changing peoples attitude and perspective towards those afflicted with AIDS. she wanted to prove that HIV victims do not deserve to be isolated from the society. in April 1987 she was the first high profile person to be pictured touching a person infected with HIV at the 'chain of hope' organization. she connected with patients that would react very favourably to her meetings , they warmed to her life energy and sympathy. it was a unique and unusual charity from a member of the royal family. one of her famous quotes about HIV victims was: "HIV does not make people dangerous to know. you can shake their hands and give them a hug; heaven knows how much they need it"
Diana was a true down to earth princess and had natural compassion and sympathy towards people of all kinds; her personal touch left a positive track everywhere she went and she touched many hearts.
She is truly a great loss to humanity. Diana with HIV patient
she will be in our hearts forever.
